SoftBank Group Corp's chip designer ARM unveiled chip technology on Monday that aims to implant artificial intelligence functions into tiny devices such as sensors used to detect human voice or other data streams.
ARM mainly supplies chip architecture technology to mobile chip suppliers such as Qualcomm and mobile terminal manufacturers such as Apple. In recent years, the company has been looking to diversify its customer base, starting to shift some of its business to markets such as self-driving cars.
ARM's business has also expanded into areas such as the Internet of Things, including transportation or agricultural irrigation systems equipped with connected transformers and automation equipment.
ARM on Monday unveiled a "neural processing unit" for its Architecture M55 chip and Ethos U55. Chips using the technology, which will be available in 2021, aim to achieve special types of mathematical operations needed for artificial intelligence software. The AI software can detect vibrations or identify keywords from a user's words.
ARM's chip technology consumes so little power that devices such as sensors can operate for years on a small battery and are connected to the Internet only when needed.
ARM executives say that reducing network connections helps protect privacy, and that the company's chip technology works by processing data locally and sending only the necessary data to remote servers.
Many areas, such as healthcare, process data more locally with little or no need to send results back to remote servers, said Dipti Vachani, senior vice President and general manager of ARM's automotive and Internet of Things business.
"You probably don't want the data to move around," Ms. Vancarne said. The new technology, she added, "will give you low-power chips to process your data in the best place you want to store it."
